Rhetorical

Since my job is at the mall, it demands that I interact with a couple hundred people in a day. I deal with quite a bit of idiots, not trying to be harsh, but i know they do not need special circumstances or handicaps. One of my favorite rhetorical devices that I use at my job is sarcasm. My coworker the other day was buying an long sleeve sweater that I knew was the same long sleeve as the non other brand name. She continues to think and feel that just because it has a man riding a horse playing polo it is so much better than the one without that logo. I follow her and try to let her know that it is the same thing only that she is paying so much more for, the ralph polo logo, even though the non-brand item is just as nice. Another customer comes to me asking for information as she continues to walk away, I pick up the item and catch up to the lady to tell her she forgot the long sleeve that was not Polo.  I’m pretty sure she knew that I had seen her pick up both items, so she takes the item from me pretending she left it there on purpose. Another rhetorical device I use at my job is euphemism.  A lot of the time I become very frustrated with Valley Fair customers, causing me to get emotionally connected and trying to prove that my opinion is their best option.

Sally

Sally ride was the first American female astronaut in space. Also which I feel is even more of an accomplishment for her was she currently is the youngest to ever reach space. As for her, it benefited her and made her serve as the Capcom for the first and second shuttle flights for NASA. Sally understood the benefits of an effective communication and she analyzed what is best for her. As a college student, she knew that in order to be successful you will need to develop communication skills including listening, speaking, and writing. Sally Ride took advantage of that and double majored in English and physics.  She gathered information and researched on what major would be the best for her and how it would push her forward. Based on her talents and interest, she evaluated the best possible options she can use and that was going to college. Sally Ride definitely represents a good critical thinker because she used her skills to enhance her success.  

Evolution vs God

Evolution and belief in god is incompatible according to Dawkin’s claims. Aquinas says that the existence of god can easily be supported by reasoning. These two articles contradict each other competently. Dawkin feels that it is not god who was the reason for being the “mover” or “cause” to how society has formed over time. I feel that Aquinas response to Dawkin’s is that he would strongly disagree and try to persuade Dawkin and reason being stronger in faith will help a person uphold his or her reasoning and beliefs of what is going on in the world and how it has changed over time. Dawkin feels that instead of the word “god” people who are religious should have chosen the name “terminator”. He also feels that the beginning of time should be called “The Big Bang” in theory a huge star blew up and created all the different planets and galaxies. All Dawkin is doing is denying that Aquinas has a point and how people made up a unhuman person which was the creator of life. 

Negative Effects of Emotion

There were multiple concepts that I liked reading about during this weeks chapter reading though my most favorite and I would like to share is “Negative Effects of Emotion.” We are all humans and use our emotions to make many decisions in life. Sometimes there are emotions based on negative stereotypes or distress coming from past issues that have not been concluded. This type of decision making blocks our critical thought process pushing us usually to the wrong decision or pushes us to feel that there is no problem at all when there really is. For example the most general negative effect of emotions is about relationships. Someone in a past relationship may have, or have been cheated on. That person is now always going to remember and make decisions to not let the new special someone “in” so they do not get hurt again. The new special somebody is negatively affected by the person’s emotions of past relationships.  

Reasoning

My preferred and mostly used type of reasoning I use in everyday life and will still be using while in the professional world is based on facts. Also I use my reasoning on how well suited I am for a certain job or specific task. One of the best ways to reason is to just see the facts. For example we see that if you attend college, pursue a degree in some subject matter, you will have a much higher chance of getting hired because you are now skilled in that career and also get paid more because of your education background. People who do not attend college are more likely going to need help with their money income and finding a job willing to hire an unskilled worker. This is based on facts and charts from the government to show the community that we should all pursue higher education. 

Dr.Novello

Dr.Novello uses cause and effect inductive reasoning when she explains to us how the number of children and teens who smoke sky rocketed ever since major brand label cigarette makers started to create ads. Joe Camel ads for Camel cigarettes first appeared on billboards and television in 1988. The effect of this, Dr.Novello states is the increase in the amount of teens and child smokers, which was caused by the Joe Camel ads for their cigarettes. She also states that there should be more education on smoking. This would ensure of more teens choosing not to smoke. I believe that it is important for teens and children to be aware of the dangers of smoking at a young age. The majority of teens I feel smoke just to fit in with the “cool crowd” and are not aware how it can effect their lives in the long run.

Inductive Arguement

Last night there was not much going on in San Jose and my friends and I decided to get together and play some Texas Hold’em Poker. There were about eight guys all on the table. Our buy in was twenty dollars which made me hesitant to play, but they convinced me to just play and have a good time and maybe I can win some money. As I being a Business Management Major I used some skills I learned in class while playing poker.

1.Business is like poker that both are like games.

-There are winners and losers in both.

-You need a certain skills set to come out ahead in both the poker game

  and  business life.  

-Money is how you “keep score” in both.

2. Lying is morally acceptable in poker games.

3. Lying is morally acceptable in business.

At the end of the night I came out winning sixty dollars, which I was very pleased!
