Dr.Novello

Dr.Novello uses cause and effect inductive reasoning when she explains to us how the number of children and teens who smoke sky rocketed ever since major brand label cigarette makers started to create ads. Joe Camel ads for Camel cigarettes first appeared on billboards and television in 1988. The effect of this, Dr.Novello states is the increase in the amount of teens and child smokers, which was caused by the Joe Camel ads for their cigarettes. She also states that there should be more education on smoking. This would ensure of more teens choosing not to smoke. I believe that it is important for teens and children to be aware of the dangers of smoking at a young age. The majority of teens I feel smoke just to fit in with the “cool crowd” and are not aware how it can effect their lives in the long run.

Inductive Arguement

Last night there was not much going on in San Jose and my friends and I decided to get together and play some Texas Hold’em Poker. There were about eight guys all on the table. Our buy in was twenty dollars which made me hesitant to play, but they convinced me to just play and have a good time and maybe I can win some money. As I being a Business Management Major I used some skills I learned in class while playing poker.
1.Business is like poker that both are like games.
-There are winners and losers in both.
-You need a certain skills set to come out ahead in both the poker game
  and  business life.
-Money is how you “keep score” in both.
2. Lying is morally acceptable in poker games.
3. Lying is morally acceptable in business.

At the end of the night I came out winning sixty dollars, which I was very pleased!

Participative Leadership

I believe that participative leadership is the most effective way of leading a group. This way of leadership is also known as "democratic leadership." Though it is the not most effective way in leading a group, experiments have shown that this type of leading creates much higher quality contributions from the group. These type of leaders participate in group activity and work offering guidance to group members. They also allow constructive input from their workforce. Participative leaders make group members feel more engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative. In the long run, for most corporations or anywhere to children having group work, quality is much more substantial then quantity. To have group work run smoothly in harmonious relations is what most companies strive to accomplish. Some huge companies who are what they are today such as Texas Instruments, AT&T, General Foods, and Procter & Gamble all come from participative leadership. Innovative approaches and employee relations are the bases for these companies and type of leadership.

Sherlock Holmes

I believe Sherlock Holmes is trying to explain to Watson that people do not think with their heads but with their hearts most of the time. And that is the wrong way to go about reasoning and solving cases. You have to see the facts and read in between the lines and do not let emotions come into play. Embellishments are false accusations about a certain story or case, which happens when the story is transferred and told over and over to different people or when people try and cover up something that was against the law or wrong. Like the child game “telephone” where each person has a new input of their choice, they try to make the story more appealing. This is what usually happens in criminal cases such as those that Sherlock Holmes tries to solve. We as human beings, is our nature to feel and be emotionally affected by certain events in the world, what Sherlock Holmes does is he censors out those feelings and strictly stays to the facts.

Same Sex Marriage

"Perspectives on Same-Sex Marriage"
I can understand where President Barrack Obama is coming from when he states that he supports civil unions and equal rights for same sex relationships, but does not want to legalize it on a federal level. It is not a consistent stand point but one that keeps American tensions at a minimum. For example I have roommates that smoke marijuana in the rooms a lot. Though I do not condone it, I do not judge them for doing what they do. To each is there own. But on a federal standpoint it is against the law to have marijuana at all without a medical card. Obama, I believe would agree with Nava and Dawidoffs that it is against the basic rights of lesbians and gays who wish to marry, but its can be left to the state legislation, not federal government, to allow marriage of gays and lesbians.

Oversimplifying Issues

My friends and I tend to be very spontaneous in trips, activities, and other plans. I have a group of friends I hang out with everyday consisting of about twenty people when we are all together. The biggest problem we have is the majority of us like to oversimplify situations or issues. For example we were planning a winter retreat to Big Bear Mountain to go snowboarding and hang out for the weekend.  Instead of worrying about how or what were we going to eat we only worried about the price to rent the cabin and having money for drinks. We spent $300 dollars on alcohol and only $150 on food to feed all twenty of us for three days and nights. All the food was gone in a days worth of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because of the over simplistic nature my friend who planned the trip I had to spend more money that I did not really have on food.

Standing your ground.

Has there ever been a time when you stood your ground on an issue despite the risk of losing your friends or even a job?

I have gotten into multiple verbal fights with many close friends and apprentices. Most fights are usually about politics or religion and everyone knows there is not ever a concrete right or wrong, only the individual’s opinion. One of the worst arguments I have got into was with a coworker of mine who argued that is was unnecessary for our government to spend money on helping our mentally and physically handicap Americans. I have a special needs younger sister and have spent my whole life around handicap kids, which was my flame into the argument. This coworker said some of the most ignorant things I have ever heard and was sincere with what he was saying about how they are just “retards” and it was their parents fault of the outcome of their offspring. I usually am not a physical person but I have the mentality of helping and defending those in need. Long story short, manager kicked both of us out and I have not said a word to the kid ever since.
